Letters to Strangers
Hordaland Kunstsenter, Bergen, 2022

For the mediation project Dear Neighbour I wrote a series of letters during a 100 day residency with Artistes en Résidence in France which I then mailed to random residents of Nordnes in Bergen. In this expanded post-card format, each text spilt into a short essay. Sending personal letters to complete strangers poses an awkward challenge. What does it mean to open up to someone you don’t know? ‘Spam’ (unwanted mail) usually tries to recruit you into a religious sect or scam money from you by way of terrible English grammar. My intentions however were less clear  – with topics that ranged from the art of saying goodbye, to the noble sport of pigeon racing. Central to my thinking were concerns around class and labour.

Sermon – the artist reading outside a church in Nordnes
Guest speaker – Laurie Lax reading a letter
Tour guide – the artist leads the audience across town
Intimate exchange – everyone back to the artist’s home for the final reading
